Art Against Authority: Inciting The Revolution

What constitutes revolutionary art? From aesthetic movements breaking codes of thought and vision to art that incites, captures or evades the revolution, this course explores how theory, literature, film, music,
photography and art challenge power.

Culture has the power to confront political and aesthetic conventions and yet radical artworks also acquire a different resonance when they become valuable commodities in the systems they set out to oppose.

Through readings of various short texts, this course considers the role of art and criticism, not only in inspiring revolutions, but also when dealing with their fallout as new power structures replace old ones. Led by Dr Ana Miller of the Department of English, Manchester Metropolitan University.

Beginners’ level, no prior knowledge required.

This is the first session of a 7 week course.
