The Passion of Joan of Arc (La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, France, 1928)

The film 'The passion of Joan of Arc', Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, starring Renée Falconetti, Eugene Sylvain, André Berley and Antonin Artaud.

Dreyer’s stunning silent masterpiece, performed here with new live score, comes to the Union Chapel for one night only, after sellout screenings in Glasgow and Cork.

With its stunning camerawork and striking compositions The Passion of Joan of Arc convinced the world that film could be art.

In a dramatic narrative based on the actual trial records, Joan is forced to endure the taunting and deceit of the English-backed church court. Accused of witchcraft and sorcery, it is only through her unwavering faith that she can rise above her tormentors, although even she has her moment of doubt. Dreyer’s masterpiece is a visual hymn to the triumph of the soul over life.

Composer Irene Buckley has used the text and the structure of the Requiem Mass to create a new evocative score for soprano, church organ and electronics. With its raw emotional power and haunting score, played on the magnificent organ in the unique setting of Union Chapel, The Passion of Joan of Arc is an awe-inspiring evening of live music and film.
