Through American Eyes: Frederic Church And The Landscape Oil Sketch

Frederic Church found oil-sketching to be a ‘most delightful’ employment and his skill caused one critic to comment ‘this little work bears witness to the fact that sublimity is not dependent on size.’

Andrew Wilton, visiting Research Fellow at Tate Britain and co-author of 'American Sublime: Landsape Painting in the United States 1820–1880', will trace the dynamic role oil sketching played for Church.
