Narcissus
The world premiere of Giorgio Madia’s ‘Narcissus’, a new short dance film featuring one of the rising stars of the Royal Ballet, Fernando Montaño, will take place in the Matcham Room at the London Hippodrome.
The guest of honour will be Dame Vivienne Westwood who created Fernando’s costume for the film.
Voted Latin American Personality of the Year at the 2013 LUKAS Awards, Fernando has been described by the BBC as ‘the Colombian Billy Elliot’ and he is one of the country’s most famous exports.
It is the first film by the acclaimed Italian choreographer and stage director Giorgio Madia and is set to the music of Claude Debussy’s 1894 composition ‘Prelude to the afternoon of a Faun’.
Inspired by the architecture of Peter Zumthor’s spas at Hotel Therme Vals in Switzerland, Debussy's symphonic poem and the classic Greek legend of a young man who falls in love with his own reflection in the water, Giorgio, Fernando and Italian art photographer Giuliano Bora have created a stunning film that uses dance to examine the role of beauty in nature and humanity.
Fernando will also perform live on stage during the evening, including a newly choreographed dance with London born Yasmine Naghdi, a First Artist with the Royal Ballet, set to a section of American born composer Carl Davis’s ‘The Lady of the Camellias’.
As part of a truly international evening of art there will be special appearances by Romanian classical pianist Alexandra Dariescu, Chinese violinist Chen Jiafeng, Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Justina Gringyte, Colombian poetess Johanna Zuleta and award-winning Russian cellist Mikhail Nemtsov.
The evening will conclude with Fernando and Giorgio discussing the ‘Narcissus’ project and answering questions from the audience in a session chaired by Oscar Guardiola-Rivera, the distinguished Colombian academic and author whose books include ‘What if Latin America Ruled the World?” and who will also be hosting this unique event.
