'YES!' Autism, Music And Choices

What does it mean to be non-verbal and yet have a voice? Can we represent autism without resorting to the cliches of savantism? How can music be useful to non-verbal autistic individuals?

Visual artist Laura Malacart has produced an interactive graphic story and a conceptual video work based on the portrait of Kyle, a 27 year-old non-verbal autistic male. Having been introduced to music a few years ago by his mother, his life has acquired a rich expressive and social dimension.

This event will explore issues raised by the story including the role of music in autism, the voice and the vulnerability and ethics of representation.

Experience the interactive graphic story ‘YES!’ and the premiere of the video work ‘Onomatopoeia’, and join a discussion with the project participants and a cross-disciplinary panel.
