Flying The Flag For France

A French-themed Flying The Flag featuring the rarely- performed First Symphony of George Onslow, sometimes referred to as ‘The French Beethoven’.

Born in France to an English father, Onslow was much admired by Berlioz who said, 'Since the death of Beethoven he is the one who holds the sceptre of instrumental music.'

The programme also includes Berlioz's Overture to Beatrice and Benedict, and Beethoven's Symphony No 3 (Eroica), whose original dedication to Napoleon was withdrawn when he proclaimed himself Emperor of France.

Flying the Flag is a five-part concert series celebrating nations and their music.
