Sunday Jazz Lunch - Tubby Hays At 80
January 30th 2015 marks a milestone anniversary in British jazz history – 80 years since the birth of the British saxophone genius Tubby Hayes.
Arguably THE legendary figure of post-war British jazz, Hayes died tragically in 1973, but has left a rich legacy of recordings, compositions and arrangements which continue to inspire.
To celebrate Tubby’s music, award-winning tenor saxophonist Simon Spillett has assembled a unique all-star band of legendary ex-Tubby Hayes alumni to perform a number of concerts commemorating their former colleague. Pianist John Critchinson, bassist Dave Green and drummer Spike Wells will also be joined by a very special guest for part of the concert – Hayes’ close friend and fellow tenor saxophonist, the legendary Bobby Wellins.
Among the music they will feature will be compositions and arrangements from albums such as The Jazz Couriers In Concert, Tubbs in New York and Mexican Green, together with standards and ballads associated with Tubby.
