International Chamber Music Season 2012-13: 1920s Berlin Cabaret Programme
An overview of the musical and literary production of Weimar Berlin in the '20s and '30s – a city ravaged by financial and political turmoil while the National Socialist Party was increasingly gaining power.
Featuring singer and actress Dagmar Manzel and narrator Robert Gallinowski, the evening includes music by Hindemith, Prokofiev and Schoenberg; poetry including extracts from How Nice It Is In Berlin by Andrej Bely and The God Of The City by Georg Heym; and cabaret songs by Weill, Holländer and Wiedoeff among others.
Performing and accompanying this varied repertoire are Jelka Weber (flute), Manfred Preis (clarinet and saxophone), Tamás Velenczei (trumpet), Kotowa Machida (violin), Martin Stegner (viola), Esko Laine (double bass), Helmut Nieberle (jazz guitar) and Uwe Hilprecht and Cordelia Höfer (pianos).
The concert is also part of The Berlin In The '20s And '30s weekend, exploring the capital of Weimar Republic as the centre of Germany's political and artistic developments.
