Unlimited Festival - Unlimited Global Alchemy: Rachel Gadsen, Bambanani, Freddie Opoku-Addaie, Tony Heaton
Unlimited Global Alchemy began life in Khayelitsha Township, South Africa, through a residency led by Rachel Gadsden (UK) in collaboration with the Bambanani artist-activist Group (SA).
Fuelled by the politics and myths surrounding chronic health issues - in particular HIV and AIDS - the emerging multi-stranded body of work offers perspectives on what it means to experience disabling conditions and to fight openly for life in the face of social taboos.
This evening of performance, film and conversation offers an encounter which is at once visceral and heartfelt, irreverent and provocative. It includes the premiere of 'Alchemy', a performance co-directed by Rachel Gadsden and choreographer Athina Vahla, featuring dancer Freddie Opoku-Addaie and Gadsden creating visual art live on stage.
This is followed by a screening of short films, featuring Gadsden and members of the Bambanani Group - Nondumiso Hlwele, Bongiwe Mba,Thobani Ncapai. Hear a discussion with them chaired by Tony Heaton.
Unlimited Global Alchemy, the exhibition, is in the Royal Festival Hall foyer from 31 August until 9 September.
