Shattered Cabaret: The Songs Of Kurt Weill

Québec City's L'orchestre d'hommes-orchestres (LODHO) return to Southbank Centre as part of the summer-long Festival of Love (28 June – 31 August), to present a tribute to Kurt Weill in a wild and unhinged evening of cabaret. The set includes classics by Kurt Weill from political-satirical opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, and famous lieder such as Zu Potsdam unter den Eichen (In Potsdam under the Oak Trees). LODHO retrace the path of this musician in exile, using rare instruments and 'music-objects' to create Surrealist tableaux vivants.

A stylishly cluttered stage full of contraptions comes alive as musical instruments are plucked from the set and the eight-person orchestra sings of the best and worst of the human condition, evoking Weill’s musical and dramatic world. Playing an antique sewing machine, a harmonica-necklace, a chandelier, and a wide range of other ‘music-objects’, LODHO capture the decadence, decay and raw beauty at the core of Weill’s songs.
