Brahms - String Sextet No.1 in B flat major Op. 18
Shostakovich - Prelude and Scherzo for String Octet Op. 11
Mendelssohn - Octet for strings in E flat major Op. 20
Together with BBC Music Magazine, Kings Place's online vote to find the Top 50 most loved pieces of chamber music in the repertoire forms the heart of their Chamber Classics Unwrapped series. The Academy Chamber Ensemble is thrilled to have the honour of performing the pieces voted in at no's 1 and 2. The runner-up in the vote, Mendelssohn's Octet, was composed when he was just sixteen years old. The work represents a key moment in the move between the Classical style and the age of Romanticism. The piece is preceded by one of Brahms' earliest and most successful works, his String Sextet, and Shostakovich's intense Prelude and Scherzo for String Octet.
