Evening Lecture: Lucy Hughes-Hallett: Gabriele D’Annunzio

Lucy will discuss the flamboyant character of Gabriele D’Annunzio and her recent publication The Pike, Gabriele D’Annunzio, Poet, Seducer & Preacher of War.

Gabriele D’Annunzio was Italy’s leading poet, and a brilliant self-publicist at the dawn of the mass media. In 1876 he ensured the success of his second book by anonymously informing newspaper editors of his own death. By the time the ‘mistake’ was discovered, his fame was established, which he unashamedly used to sell his work.

In Lucy Hughes-Hallett’s compelling biography The Pike, she charts the controversial life of D’Annunzio, addressing the cult of nationalism and the origins of political extremism.

Lucy is the author of the widely acclaimed Cleopatra: Histories, Dreams and Distortions which won the Fawcett Prize and the Emily Toth Award. She is a respected critic, writing for the Sunday Times Book Section and fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. The Pike, was Radio 4’s book of the week from 21 January.

Lucy will be available to sign copies of The Pike at this event.
