Lie Back And Think Of America
Inspired by the documentary ‘Choc’late Soldiers from the USA’.
After the Visiting Forces Act was passed in 1942, allowing the American armed forces to operate martial law, eighteen American men in the armed forces were executed on British soil. Of those, fourteen were black or Hispanic.
'Lie Back and Think of America' is a novelistic, funny, touching, one-woman play about one English family’s life during WW2 and their personal encounter with the effects of segregation and the Visiting Forces Act.
Set in Bethnal Green, Front Room Theatre are delighted to bring 'Lie Back and Think of America' to London's East End for the first time. Written and performed by Natalie Penn (BBC's 'Doctors', Athlete's 'Black Swan Song'). Directed by Naomi Jones. 'Compelling and well written' - Soho Theatre.
