This season's featured artist Denis Matsuev -'the Siberian bear with the fastest paws in the Arctic and perhaps anywhere else' – returns in his favourite repertoire with Rachmaninov’s ever-popular Second Piano Concerto. Valery Gergiev frames it with Balakirev’s epic symphonic poem Russia, a reworking of an Overture on Russian Themes collected during expeditions up and down the Volga, and Rachmaninov’s powerfully emotional Third Symphony.
