Capstone Contemporary Piano Series
Joanna MacGregor presents an evening devoted to the eccentric genius of Erik Satie, godfather of Minimalism and the inventor of 'furniture music.' From the elegantly mysterious Gymnopédies to the tender vocal monologue describing the death of Socrates, Joanna MacGregor explores Satie's profound impact on the twentieth century. The programme also features John Cage's Cheap Imitation, the mirror-image of Socrate, the crystalline beauty and silences of Arvo Pärt's tintinnabuli style, and in Stravinsky's jazz-inflected Sonata.
Joanna is joined by Stephen Pratt, bringing to life the shrewd social satire of Sports et Divertissments, and the mezzo Vanessa Williamson in Mort de Socrate. Joanna MacGregor also plays live to Satie's seminal (and very funny) film collaboration with surrealist René Clair.
