A Russian Spring

Programme to include:

Haydn Quartet in B minor Op 33 no 1;
Shostakovich Quartet No 5 in B flat Op 92;
Beethoven Quartet in C Op 59 No 3 ‘Rasumovsky’

Beethoven’s expansive Op 59 quartets bear the name of the enlightened Russian count who commissioned them in 1805, whilst Haydn’s ‘new and special’ Op 33 quartets were dedicated to the Grand Duke Paul of Russia.

Life for a Soviet artist in the 1950s, however, was rather tougher, and it wasn't until well after Stalin’s death that Shostakovich allowed his autobiographical, yet forward looking fifth quartet to be performed.
