Another comedy from the director of 'Up In The Air' about a self-deluded person who believes their empty way of life is envied by everybody else. Mavis (Charlize Theron) is a ghost-writer for a series of young adult novels. Divorced and in her 30s when she learns that her old high school sweetheart Buddy (Patrick Wilson) has had a baby with his wife, she decides to return to her home town to reclaim him. Reviled by her peers as a 'psychotic prom queen bitch' who made their adolescent lives miserable, Mavis nonetheless endeavours to rescue Buddy from what she assumes is a boring small-town existence. Her old classmate Matt (Patton Oswalt) offers advice and some of his home-brewed bourbon, but there are some lessons that Mavis will have to learn by herself.
