About Trishna
A retelling of Thomas Hardy's classic novel Tess Of The D'Urbervilles. What makes this version so different? The action is transplanted to contemporary Rajasthan. Village girl Trishna (Freida Pinto) lives in the countryside with her family. After her father is injured in a car accident, Trishna goes to work in a tourist hotel at the request of rich city boy Jay (Riz Ahmed playing a composite of the book's two main male characters). Her family come to depend on Trishna's income, as they did her father's; Jay on the other hand has much more freedom. Yet despite their differences, the two become friends and then fall in love. Through their relationship, the conflicting values of agriculture and industry, and community and capitalism clash. Trishna has strong feelings for Jay, but their path is difficult, and she comes to realise the importance of her survival.
