Lucas' 1970 debut, adapted from a student short which was endorsed by Francis Ford Coppola, not only gives obvious indications of his glittering future career but also works in its own right as a terrific bit of sci-fi entertainment, creating a palpable sense of tension in its view of futuristic dystopia. Duvall is the title character, attempting to escape from a society located beneath the earth, where everybody is known by number rather than name, sex is a banned and sinister androids rule over the people, suppressing their urges with all manner of unidentified drugs and creating a society where no questions are asked.
