About The Pianist

Roman Polanski adapts the story of Polish Jew and WW2 survivor Wadislaw Szpilman for the cinema with powerfully effective and affecting results. As polished and professional as Schindler's List (which he was initially approached to direct) it bears one significant difference. The Pianist, with its inspiring yet insular lead (a marvellous Adrien Brody), simply watches proceedings without involvement. It passes no judgement on the atrocities through either characters or camerawork, keeping the audience at an objective distance. A startling, if somewhat clinical study of Holocaust life.
