About The Invisible Woman

The story of Charles Dickens' mistress. Nelly (Felicity Jones) is a happily married mother and schoolteacher who hides a passionate interior life and a scandalous past. She reveals to a kindly vicar that as a teenage aspiring actress she caught the eye of Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes). Charles and his friend Wilkie Collins (Tom Hollander) are preparing to stage a play and Nelly's calculating mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) nudges her into the spotlight. Charles is a conceited genius with a warm heart who is better at organising his emotions on the page than in life, and he is attracted by Nelly's beauty and emotional fragility. But though having a mistress is hardly unusual, the famous author must keep Nelly out of the public eye.
