About The Help

A warm-hearted drama based on the best-selling book by Kathryn Stockett. The story unfolds amidst turbulent race relations in the American South in the 1960s. Idealistic Skeeter (Emma Stone) is a recent college graduate who moves back to her home town of Jackson, Mississippi. She is soon struck by the difference in how the white women of the town treat their black maids, and how they treat each other. Brittle, socially conscious neighbourhood leader Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard) comments at her bridge club that the maids should be made to use separate bathrooms, an idea that many of her peers support. Skeeter's burgeoning friendship with two maids, Abileen (Viola Davis) and Minny (Octavia Spencer) leads Skeeter to try to write a book about the maids' mistreatment. However, the maids are scared of reprisals if they speak their minds, and she has difficulty gaining their trust.
