About The Flowers Of War
A lavish drama from the director of House Of Flying Daggers about a fictional hero's involvement in the Nanking massacre. John Miller (Christian Bale) is a hard-drinking American mortician who has come to Nanking to bury a Catholic priest during the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937. As Japanese soldiers begin ravaging the city and its people, he must stay in the church with some convent pupils. A band of local prostitutes come there to hide as they believe the Japanese soldiers roaming the area are likely to leave a foreign institution alone. This disparate group of innocents and courtesans live with the threat of assault and death as John begins repairing a truck in the hope that he might be able to rescue the schoolgirls.
