About The Beat That My Heart Skipped
Remakes are notoriously shaky territory for film makers, but this French re-telling of James Toback's 1978 indie flick, Fingers, seems to be a rare exception. It may be set in Paris rather than New York, with Romain Duris taking Harvey Keitel's place in the lead role, but the compelling tale of a man torn between two worlds as he approaches 30 still shines through. Tom (Duris) is living a delinquent life, following in his dying father's footsteps as an enforcer and violent rent collector. But his long-forgotten dreams of being a concert pianist are re-ignited when he is offered an audition by a friend of his late musician mother and he begins taking music lessons with Vietnamese Miao Lin (Linh Dan Pham). The music rekindles a gentleness in Tom's life - but is it too late?
