About Sparkle

A musical weepie about a '60s girl group. Sparkle (real-life pop star Jordin Sparks) is a musical prodigy living in Detroit with her mother Emma (Whitney Houston) and two sisters Dee (Tika Sumpter) and Sister (Carmen Ejogo). Sparkle writes her own songs and dreams of being a star, Dee wants to eventually become a doctor and Sister wants to move into her own place. The girls decide to enter a talent competition to win a cash prize and Sparkle attracts the attention of aspiring promoter Stix (Derek Luke) who helps them to form a group. His good-hearted cousin Levi ((Omari Hardwick ) proves to be a hit with Sister, but she is also drawn to the disrespectful, flashy comedian Satin Struthers (Mike Epps). Meanwhile, the girls have to hide their nightclub performances from a disapproving Emma.
