A documentary from the director of Baraka. Samsara is a Sanskrit word meaning 'world' or 'worldly activities,' and this film deals with humanity's relationship with the Earth and our place in the universe. A kind of travelogue, director Ron Fricke spent five years recording stunning footage in over 25 countries spanning five continents. He captured disaster zones, industrial sites and beautiful natural landscapes. To stop it from being a simple slide show of pretty pictures, the film also features office workers, baptisms, pilgrimages and technological wonders such as lifelike androids, in an attempt to show the circle of life. With no dialogue or text, Samsara relies on its photography and the diversity of its subject to hold the attention but some viewers might find it a little too solemn and heavy with symbolism.
