About Room 237

Kubrick obsessives share their many crazy ideas concerning symbolism and secret messages in seminal psychological horror film The Shining. Filmmaker Rodney Ascher deconstructs and reconstructs every second backwards and forwards to support all manner of crackpot claims. For example, some people earnestly believe that The Shining is actually about the genocide of Native Americans, while others say it relates to the Holocaust. Continuity errors are explained away or magnified into narrative significance while subliminal messages are pounced upon by voluble nerds, with film footage and humorous staged pieces to punctuate their theories. Using further footage from Kubrick's daughter's behind the scenes documentary for extra weight, Ascher and his experts lovingly prove their fan credentials in this entertainingly odd love letter to the Overlook Hotel and its inhabitants.
