Paranormal researcher Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her physicist assistant Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) have seen it all: ghost whispering, faith healing, psychics...and they don't believe in any of it. Over the years these hardened sceptics have learnt to detect the subtle tricks of staged supernatural happenings – what Margaret calls 'red lights.' But when legendary blind psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) comes out of a thirty-year-long retirement, Margaret does not seem all that keen to investigate him and warns Buckley that they should steer clear. She also has her own problems in the form of a comatose son. Buckley is too eager to find answers to listen, and asks his star student Sally (Elizabeth Olsen) for help in exposing Silver.
