About Nostalgia For The Light (Nostalgia De La Luz)

A documentary about the quest for knowledge of the universe in the unique surroundings of the Atacama desert. The sky is so translucent that astronomers from all over the world gather on the mountains to observe the stars which have long since moved on by the time their images reach us. The atmosphere is so dry that there is no wildlife, and it has a preserving effect on human remains. The bodies of Pre-Columbian mummies and 19th century explorers have been found, along with political prisoners who were executed by the Chilean army after the military coup in 1973. Astronomers gaze up; bereft wives and relatives gaze down, searching for corporeal fragments of their loved ones to bring home. One women recounts finding a foot later identified as her husband's and she takes comfort from this, believing as the astronomers do that reflecting on the past is an important and worthwhile endeavour.
