About Mysterious Skin

This is a very uncomfortable film dealing with two teenagers haunted by their pasts - Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who had a sexual relationship with his coach when he was eight, and Brian (Brady Corbet) who believes he was abducted by aliens as a boy. With its damaged characters and a plot containing a brutal rape this certainly isn't an easy film to watch, but it isn't just out to shock either. The focus is very much on character, and director Gregg Araki is lucky to have a cast who are able to inhabit their roles so sensitively. An adaptation of a Scott Heim novel, the screen treatment has been done just well enough to make it worthwhile.
