About Mission To Lars
An uplifting documentary about Tom Spicer, a man with learning disabilities who, with his siblings' help, goes on a transatlantic quest to find his musical hero, Lars Ulrich of Metallica. Tom has a form of autism called Fragile X Syndrome, and asked his journalist sister Kate about Lars over and over again when they were growing up. Twenty years later, she decides to do something about it. Along with Tom's brother William, they journey from Exmouth to Bristol, to Heathrow and then L.A. The siblings never lose sight of their goal and Tom emerges as a complex and likeable character. The film has three goals: entertainment, awareness raising and fund raising. All profits go to Mencap, and the film has charity status. In raising money for the film, the producers also raised over £25,000 for Mencap.
