About Metropolitan

Originally released in 1990, Metropolitan is the first in a dialogue-driven trilogy from Whit Stillman focusing on groups who are coming of age. The story centres on a bunch of preppy New Yorkers in debutante week who form the Sally Fowler Rat Pack. These four debs and their escorts meet each night to play bridge and discuss everything from socialism and literature to detachable tuxedo collars. Joining the group is Tom Townsend (Edward Clements), an outsider from the wrong side of the tracks and with radical ideals who is critical of the society he has found himself in. Unbeknown to him, Audrey (Carolyn Farina) falls for him - and becomes his soul mate. There's no high drama, no gushing romance or exploding cars - just fascinating, sometimes funny, discussion and great dialogue.
