About In Darkness
This Oscar-nominated movie is based on a true story. Leopold Socha (Robert Wieckiewicz) is a sewerage worker in Poland during World War II. He supplements his income by stealing, using the sewer tunnels beneath the city of Lvov to hide his spoils. When a nearby ghetto is liquidised he meets some Jewish people desperately running from persecution. As a Catholic he is no advocate for their struggle, but he grudgingly agrees to hide them in the sewers in exchange for money. His secret takes its toll in various ways; he might be saving some lives, but he has to go to increasingly unsavoury lengths (including murder) to protect them. Our hero journeys from self-serving to self-sacrificing, we see the evils of the Nazi reign in close detail, and everyone must make decisions that eat away at their humanity.
