About Free Men (Les Hommes Libres)
In German occupied Paris during WWII an Algerian immigrant is inspired to join the resistance by his unexpected friendship with a Jewish man. Younes (Tahar Rahim) is a black marketeer who is only looking out for himself when he is caught by the French police. To avoid a prison sentence he agrees to spy on a mosque, as the police believe that the leader Ben Ghabrit (Michael Lonsdale) is smuggling North African Jews away from the Nazis. One night Younes hears a young man named Salim (Mahmud Shalaby) sing, and is moved by his beautiful voice and lively personality. But Salim is Jewish and therefore a target for the Nazis, and this injustice pushes Younes into turning to the Resistance movement. With Ben acting as a kind of mentor, Younes tries to help some Jewish children get fake Algerian passports while the authorities watch closely.
