About Detachment

Henry Barthes (Adrien Brody) is a man with a true gift for teaching. However, he chooses to be a substitute teacher over settling at one school. He does not want to form attachments and so drifts in and out of the lives of young people without making any emotional connections to them or his fellow teachers. But when he is placed at a public school in Queens that is headed by a frustrated and weary administration, he finds the apathy of the students too hard to bear. The exhausted teachers (played by Lucy Liu, Christina Hendricks and William Petersen) struggle to motivate themselves, giving documentary-style interviews to camera about their battles with students. Henry finds both pain and compassion in his relationships with his ailing father (Louis Zorich) and a runaway teenage prostitute (Sami Gayle).
