About Death Of Mr Lazarescu (moartea Domnului Lazarescu)

This Cannes Festival prize-winner from Romanian writer/director Cristi Puiu is part of a six film project set in the suburbs of Bucharest. Instalment number one is this tragicomic tale about Dante Remus Lazarescu (Ion Fiscuteanu), an eccentric 63-year-old widower who has nothing but three cats and a bottle of booze for company. After falling ill with stomach pains, he seeks medical help but obstacles block his way. There's bored and unsympathetic doctors with varying diagnoses, postponed treatment due to a bus crash and transfers from one hospital to another. Bureaucracy, inefficiency and indifference are all on display as Mr Lazarescu and the film move toward their inevitable end. It's demanding viewing but a highly realistic portrait of a dying man let down by the system. In Romanian with English subtitles.
