About Bolshoi Ballet: The Nutcracker

On Christmas Eve, Marie's magician godfather Drosselmeyer gives her a nutcracker carved in the shape of a man. At midnight, when the celebrations are over, the toys magically spring to life. The nutcracker grows to human size and comes to Marie's rescue as a battle rages between the toy soldiers and the Mouse King, backed by his rodent army! In the second act of Tchaikovsky's enduringly popular festive ballet, Marie and Drosselmeyer's nephew are whisked off to the Land of the Sweets. Here they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince, who entertain the duo with their lovely dances. Based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's story, 'The Nutcracker' continues to enchant audiences young and old. This superlative version was choreographed by former Bolshoi Artistic Director Yuri Grigorovich and is magnificently interpreted by the company's dancers.
