An Inspector Calls By JB Priestley
The play is set in 1912 in the home of a prosperous upper middle class family, where a celebratory dinner party is being held for the daughter of the house, who has just announced her engagement.
In the middle of the party, a police Inspector unexpectedly calls at the house with disturbing news. A young working class woman known to everyone at the party has committed suicide. The Inspector makes it clear that all of them could in some way or other have had some responsibility for her death.
Merriment turns to mystery in this ingenious thriller in which all is not as it seems...
This is a suspenseful play in which class, social responsibility; politics and society itself are all brought into question. An Inspector Calls was memorably filmed in 1954 with Alastair Sim at the height of his acting powers as the policeman who challenges all of the family's consciences.
