The Sculptor Prince?
Victor Gleichen (1833-91), nephew of Queen Victoria, was a moderately successful sculptor in late-nineteenth-century London. The Henry Moore Institute Archive contains a rare album of photographs showing the contents of the display gallery in his studio in St James's Palace, London.
The carefully staged photographs, likely taken by Gleichen's studio foreman, show the studio and works in various states of completion, from sketch models to finished marbles. As a member of the royal family he had an ability to secure commissions from the highest echelons of the capital's elite, as well as earning the enmity of his fellow sculptors and ensuring he was never taken seriously as a professional artist.
