Frenchmottershead

We all play our part in the street life of Brighton; quietly-significant events initiated by us, and staged at a particular time and place. It’s an everyday city that coexists with its public image - the pavilion, the pier and a reputation for the eccentric - where the streets are animated by the actions of the people who live, work and play here.

10 Acts began with a call for public participation; where locals talked with the artists FrenchMottershead (Rebecca French and Andrew Mottershead) about the range of ways they animate the public spaces around the North Laine neighbourhood. The square where a child chases seagulls away from his lunch, the bench used for early morning meditation, the busy street a woman used to escape unwanted attention; it’s the nuances of these mini-dramas that are key to this art project.

From the initial conversations, ten individuals were invited to work with the artists to construct a photograph featuring them and portraying the moment where their private lives and the public stage of the street temporarily merge.

This stunning photographic installation made specifically for the Jubilee Square and the inhabitants of Brighton will be on display from 11 January to 10th March as part of the Street Lights project. The project is run by The Square, Brighton Ltd, The Basement, CineCity and Photoworks, with support from Jubilee Library.
