Old Herbaceous

Old Herbaceous brings to life a rural English garden and gardener.

This gentle one man play tells of the relationship between Herbert Pinnegar and his employer Mrs Charteris, a relationship that spanned nearly seventy years as he tended the garden of her country manor house somewhere in Gloucestershire.

Through his reminiscences you hear how Bert Pinnegar rises from foundling and inauspicious schoolboy having a love of plants, winning a children’s wild flower competition, at the village flower show, meeting his future employer Mrs Charteris.
Rising to the lofty position of Head Gardener to become the legendary "Old Herbaceous," the most esteemed flower-show judge in the county and a famed horticultural wizard.

As Bert potters around his plant pots and gardening tools, he tells you tales of his life as a gardener.
He gives you gardening tips and even cookery suggestions and through his eyes
you are drawn into his world, a world that brims with ‘olde worlde’ charm and fond memories, with just a hint of sadness.
