Richard Slee: Work & Play Exhibition

As one of Britain’s most important contemporary ceramic artists, Carlisle born Richard Slee challenges conventional notions of ceramic art. The playful objects he produces are inspired by familiar objects in our daily lives and celebrate a love for the ‘great indoors’.

Tullie House is working with the Hales Gallery, London, to host this major exhibition before it tours the UK. As well as new, exciting mixed-media commissions, the show includes about 50 works spanning the last ten years divided into two themes, one about work, DIY and tools and the other around play and games.

In an innovative collaboration, renowned designer Michael Marriott has worked with Richard to develop the exhibition furniture. Delighting in finding ingenious means of designing and making “truly modern objects” through “the honest and appropriate use of material, process and function”, Michael, like Richard, continually explores his vision of material culture. The result is an exhibition with a difference!

The show includes a speciallycommissioned work produced as part of a creative response competition for Cumbrian art students and is supported by online learning resources. A limited edition, fine press Artist’s Book ‘Richard Slee: Means of Production, 2003 – 2013’ will be available from June 2014.
