War, Women And Song
'War, Women and Song' is a musical drama inspired by the 600 performers who signed up for tours of duty with the Lena Ashwell YMCA Concert Parties between 1914 and 1919. They played in military bases and by hospital bedsides wherever troops were stationed. Among them were Elsie Griffin, the Fry's Chocolate Factory girl, for whom 'Roses of Picardy' and 'Danny Boy' were written and Ivor Novello, heartthrob composer of 'Keep the Home Fires Burning.'
Theatre-makers Anna Farthing and Bea Roberts have dug deep into the archives to shine a light on the experiences of those who tried to drown out the cacophony of battle with harmonies from home.
Performed by a multi-talented professional cast that includes Samantha Barron, Nick Blakeley, Hannah Lee, Bryan Moriarty and Cassie Webb.
