The Cathedral was, until the establishment of the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon in 1923, the Parish Church of St John the Evangelist. A Norman Benedictine Priory was founded on the site in 1093 and this became the Parish Church in the 16th century at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries. Because of the nature and type of its location it is thought that the Norman Priory might have been built on the site of an older, possibly Celtic, church.
