Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe
Iolanthe presents, in W.S Gilbert’s unique way, a topsy-turvy world of Parliament invaded by fairies! This University of Chichester production is updated to the present day - it tells the story of Phyllis, a ward of court, who is not allowed to marry her sheep farmer boyfriend Strephon who, unbeknownst to her, is actually half a fairy. Twenty five years previously his fairy mother, Iolanthe, had been banished from Fairyland for marrying a mortal – The Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, no less. The Fairy Queen has now pardoned Iolanthe and together with all the other fairies they storm Westminster and make Strephon a Member of Parliament so he can win his girl – with fantastic consequences!
